SUNDAY 18 OCT 09

Race Report

Even though it was a weird morning weather-wise, 85 competitors fronted up for the first race of the triathlon season, and 36 of these were itching to take on the brand-new Sprint Distance race featuring a 750m swim, a 20km bike ride and a 5km run.

As usual, the day started off with oodles of people pitching in to help get the course set up - putting up bike racks, bunting, setting out the swim buoys and the run turns - before the highlight of the day with the juniors doing their 100m swim leg and then running the gauntlet through the adults who applauded them as they raced up into transition. Definitely one of the best points of our club!

The adults waded into the slightly chilly water to take off under the starter's orders of Peter Tate, CEO of Triathlon NSW who took the time to come up from Sydney to take a look at our little club.

The swim leg went off incident-free, with the water safety boardriders of Dwayne Peoples, Kelvin Heath and Grant Campbell of Soldiers Beach Surf Club only having to nudge people who were swimming slightly off-course and pointing them in the right direction before they wound up in New Zealand. Some swimmers were seen taking a bit of a breather halfway through the 750m swim of the Sprint course and having a bit of a backstroke or breaststroke, but due to the face we were all wearing our sexy new CCTRI swim caps we can't point fingers or tell any princesses to man up!

On the cycle leg the road was a tad on the damp side, but everyone managed to keep upright on two wheels, although new member Paul Wildschut was seen putting a foot out BMX style at the bottom turn (check out his form in the Photo Album!)

The run was pretty intense with Sprint Graders and A-Graders all heading out for two laps around the run turns, so there were plenty of opportunities to shout out encouragement at each other and to grab a water at the transition turn (thankfully!).

After the races were run, the presentation recognised not only the winners of the individual grades, but also the very important 'Personal Worst Award'. This month it was won by first-timer Dionne Bolla who brought everything she needed to race - apart from swimmers! But before you start getting visions of a skinny-dipping triathlete - bear in mind she did have her wetsuit there and just chucked that on over her underwear. Thankfully Dionne has a sense of humour and graciously accepted the Wooden Spoon at her first CCTRI race.

So triathlon is back on the Central Coast for another season, and judging by the first race we are set to have an awesome summer. Several racers also backed up by heading down to Gosford that afternoon to compete in the Twilight Aquathon and wind down the weekend with a run/swim/run, but with so many taking on the Sprint Distance triathlon and getting worn out we will forgive everyone who just went home and had a few Tim Tams washed down with Gatorade instead!

Next race is on 22 NOV 09 - who's in?

SUNDAY 22 NOV 09

Well, it is just getting harder and harder to write race reports these days, as there is just not enough time to run around after the race and get thoughts and fun facts of competitors! Maybe we need to institute a special clipboard on race day so that people can just jot down noteworthy items for inclusion?

In saying that, the November race was definitely the largest field seen at Summerland Point, with over 160 CCTRI triathletes racking their bikes at Sandy Beach Reserve. To be perfectly honest, we thought that we were going to be well short of spaces on the racks and would have to rely heavily on people leaning bikes against trees, fences and transition marshals, but fortunately everyone bunching up a touch allowed everyone to get their bike ready to rock.

We had 25 kids take off first and run the gauntlet to the bike transition, and then the largest field of adult competitors took to the water under the watchful eye of the water safety crew from Soldiers Beach Surf Club.

If you did not get hit by sea lice during the swim leg, then please drop our own Communications Director James "Dog" Musgrave a line and thank him as for the second month running he acted as a magnet and seemed to draw every sea louse in Lake Macquarie to him. Perhaps it's the high fat content that they go for.

When hitting the bike leg it's never fun to see someone wheeling their bike back down the road, but sadly we had two members have bike probs and had to pull out of the cycle leg. In a true display of spirit, both of these DNF's were seen out running the run leg regardless.

New club member and club sponsor Vlad Shatrov came for his first race with us, and took out the Sprint Grade nearly a minute ahead of our second place Richard Munro. I guess we need to institute a rule about not blitzing the field on the first appearance?

Over in the women's Sprint, Angie Sharp came in ahead of Suzanne Chandler and Rosie Vince. Again, another relatively new member without the common decency of pulling back and taking it relatively easy on their first time out!

Just jokes of course guys! Welcome to the club and awesome to witness your brilliant times!

Wooden Spoon wise, there were three people that missed their swim or run turns and went longer than they needed to, such as Cassie Baker, Lee Mitchell and Mel Ives, but as Lee has won the Wooden Spoon in the past for doing the exact same thing I'm sure the girls won't mind if we award it to him again for consistency!

(Just goes to show folks: always a good idea to pay attention to the briefing!)

As usual, BIG THANX to all the people who helped put the course together and pack it all up again. Even BIGGER THANX to our volunteers who helped out with the various marshalling duties during the actual race itself. Needless to say, without people like you (and you know who you are) pitching in and helping out, there would most likely be no race - or it would at least most likely start about three and a half hours late!

SUNDAY 20 DEC 09

As you may know, some of us who have been involved in the triathlon club for a while enjoy looking back and comparing our races to the way they were back then. After the turnout this morning, today's race is no exception with 141 competitors taking part as opposed to 33 back in December 2007.

The only problem with having such awesome race numbers is that it makes it rather goshdarn difficult to put together a race report - as it's impossible to have a quick chat to every single person after the race to find out how they did, or how a friend of theirs did.

Therefore, the abbreviated highlights are:

Alex Malone stepping up to A-Grade for his first hit-out, and coming in just 5 minutes slower than his uncle Dog Musgrave's PB for that grade. Give this kid a decent bike that fits him and he'll kick Dog's best time back to the kennel.

Angus Baldwin getting lost and going past the Sprint Grade run turn. There's always one...

Leigh Mitchell actually staying on course for once!

Oodles of newcomers to the club getting out there and doing good things such as Joel Cook, Matt Baker, Bradey Casey, and Kevin Wills (see results below)

Several familiar faces that we haven't seen for a while coming back to race with us like Brett Stewart and Chris Williams.

Big thanks as usual to all our volunteers for letting us run a fun and safe race, and thanks to Greg Carroll from Tri NSW coming up to run our future stars through some transition drills.

So all in all - a magnificent race to wind up 2009. Apart from a few teething problems with the new swim buoys and a bit of drafting and overtaking in the no-overtaking zone things are looking even better coming into 2010!

SUNDAY 24 JAN 10

As we stated last month, it was only a matter of time before Alex Malone outdid his uncle Dog Musgrave's best time for A-Grade, and January was the month! Alex finished the A-Grade race in just under 60 mins!

Michael Madigan had an awesome race slicing four whole minutes off his Personal Best. Good thing he had wonderful team-mates who lent him a tube and helped him change it up before the race, huh?

A couple of people who will remain nameless still managed to miss their swim turns or do the incorrect number of cycle loops, but apart from a few teething problems like that, another awesome race in the bag!
