The Gosford Twilight Aquathon series is the newest addition to the CCTRI calendar, and gives us the chance to run a race down the southern end of the Central Coast on a Sunday evening once a month. This race has been added to offer something to a wide variety of multisporters:

This race will kick off at 5pm on Sunday evenings over Summer on the following dates:

The format will consist of a run/swim/run, with A-Grade running 2km from the start/finish area along Brisbane Water past Iguanas to Bluetongue Stadium and back before entering the water for a 500m swim and then running the same distance again.

B-Grade will follow a similar format and route, but will turn back on the run at Iguanas which is a 1km run, and the swim will only be 300m.

C-Graders will only run 500m, swim 100m and run 500m again.

After the finish, we hope that people will hang around in the park and enjoy a barbeque or picnic, as we are hoping that this will become a bit of a club social event.

Unlike some races that the club runs, this one is open to non CCTRI members, so if you are a surf club member, a Terrigal Trotter, a Stingray or any other sporty person who has always been interested in running a race that combines more than one discipline but have never been too keen on the cycling thing - this is the event for you!

Race Report

The innaugural Gosford Twilight Aquathon was a huge success, with 31 competitors - some of them newbies to the whole multisport thing - rocking up to run, swim and run again. Compared to the current field of athletes hitting the water for the club triathlon it's definitely not as big, but when you remember that merely two years ago the club was lucky getting 30 people up to Summerland Point on a good day then this aquathon may have huge potential.

We started the kids off first and they ran up to their turn and back through the claps and cheers of the big kids who who were getting ready to take off. As the juniors hit the water the A and B Graders took off together - trying to keep speedsters like Adam Cartmell and Adam Beisler in sight.

Of course, some aquathonners like Andrew Mildren, Thomas Robertson, Stephen Boyd, Michael Madigan and Dog had a tough gig keeping up as they were all backing up from the morning's triathlon. Surely if they hadn't expended so much energy up at Summerland Point the very same day they would have left the two Adams in the dust? Hehe!

We couldn't have put it on without the help of the VRA and Wamberal Surf Club, who kept a watchful eye on the traffic and the water safety respectively.

As expected, it also seemed like people were more keen on hanging around and socialising in the park afterwards. We will definitely have to look into bringing some snags and firing up the barbie at the next race and maybe getting a game of touch footie or soccer going!

Next aquathon will be held at 5pm on Sunday 15th November. Mark that down in your calendar now!

SUNDAY 15 NOV 09

For an awesome weekend, the weather turned a tad on the less-than-awesome side come Sunday afternoon, but nevertheless 44 competitors turned up for the running and swimming and running again alongside and in Brisbane Water.

Young Shane Ilgen took out the A-Grade race. Take a look at the photos and you'll see that whereas most people were content just to wade slowly into the water putting on their goggles and swim caps, Shane actually put up a decent amount of spray by haring into the water at top speed and diving to gain those critical few seconds.

As well as the usual suspects like Steve Boyd, Karlee Egger and Gerrard Ivins turning up to race, it was also great seeing regular club members like Debbie Wooden and Bradford Fenton coming to try this new event, and also great to see occasional visitors like Sasha and Jasmine Frankel, Keira Lee Pride and Juliana Bahr-Thomson returning to take part in a CCTRI race.

Big thanks have to go out to our team of volunteers who enabled us to actually put the race on: Julie Towgood, Joanne Musgrave and Debbie Hodgson for taking care of the timing, Sonya White for keeping racers hydrated during the run, Carl White for ensuring that runners gave way to cars entering the Iguanas carpark, Stephanie Hedgecoe for snapping the photos and the gang from Killcare Surf Club for ensuring that just as many bodies made it back out of the water as what entered.

Next Gosford Twilight Aquathon will be held on Sunday 13th December, so if you're free that afternoon and want to wind down the weekend by having a casual, fun race with your clubmates (or go hard as!) we'd love to see you there and see if we can crack 50 racers taking part!

SUNDAY 13 DEC 09

The Gosford Twilight Aquathon Series only started two months ago in October 2009 where we had 31 people taking part. This month at the December race we had over double that number getting out there for a run along Brisbane Water, a swim in the waters off Gosford Sailing Club, and another run.

Backing up from his win last month, Shane Ilgen took out the A-Grade followed by newcomer Toby Cracknell and long-time-triathlete/first-time aquathonner Angus Baldwin.

B-Grade saw Kurt 'What-The-Hell-Am-I-Doing-In-B-Grade' Pride cross the line first (in his defence, it was his first race and he did turn up to register three seconds before the start!) with Kaitlyn Mateschka and Jason Hayman following him in.

In the C-Grade Juniors, Britney Belmar shaved over 30 seconds off her October time to come in first, with Toby Elliott taking second and newcomer Kane Douch taking third.

A special mention for true grit has to go to Sasha Frankel who had a pretty bad injury to her hand less than a month ago after a bike fall who still got out there and gave it a shot, but pulled out during the race. We're sure she'll be back in January with a sub-25min A-Grade race when her hand is 100% better.

Other newbies who got out and enjoyed their first aquathon include Rob Hekking, Kevin and Sabine Byrne, Stuart Baverstock, Grant Campbell, David Broadbent, Logan Moore, and Alex Malone who beat the previous best time of his uncle (Dog Musgrave) by over three minutes!

We hope to see all these rookies (apart from Alex!) and many more at the January race on Sunday 31st, and hope that everyone who enjoys the Gosford Twilight Aquathons will consider grabbing the bike and coming up to Summerland Point sometime to give a full triathlon a go. Just like Daniel Geurs - who did his first CCTRI multisport race at the aquathon, then signed up to do the December Triathlon within 24 hours!

The only downside in having such an event that has grown so large so quickly is that we cannot record split times for the swims and the runs, and can only take down race times at the finish line. Hopefully next summer the club will have timing chips to take care of this for us all!

SUNDAY 31 JAN 10

When a couple of us sat around a table and discussed the possibility of having a Sunday arvo aquathon series in Gosford, we thought that 30 - 40 entrants would be what we'd wind up having. Imagine our constant surprise as this thing just keeps growing and we had over 80 competitors on Sunday afternoon for the January Twilight Aquathon!

We tried out a new transition setup for the big kids which went very well, and once the little kids (and Steve Boyd!?!?) were all in the water the A-Grader and B-Graders took off. Angus Baldwin held the lead throughout the first run in the A-Grade, followed closely by Shane Ilgen and Bryce Woodley.

Coming out of the water, Shane and Bryce had taken the lead due to their swimming skills. Probably worth mentioning that Angus is still new to this whole multisport thing!

It was great to see that Leigh Mitchell remembered his shoes this time, but we did have one Forgetful Freddo: Brady Casey tore out of transition for his second run, and then realised that he didn't chuck a shirt back on. In his defence, he DID write to the club after the race and apologised for his little faux pas!

Shane Ilgen took out the A-Grade race, with Hayden Forbes leading the B-Graders across the line and Britney Belmar winning the C-Grade juniors.

Back in the field, we had Michael Madigan securing yet another Personal Best, long-time CCTRI triathlete Chris Smith doing very well for his first aquathon, and Dog Musgrave being beaten by 14 year old nephew Alex Malone in their first ever head-to-head race together. Gronya Alex!

Photos online HERE.

Next month's aquathon will not be for the faint-hearted, as it is on the same day as the February Triathlon at Summerland Point.

Oh, and if you were the silly bunny who left your shoes at the event, please contact us as they are stinking up the equipment trailer!
